We look at what the EV industry is upto
Today, we take a look at pan India heavy vehicle sales data from 2020 to 2025. We look at various brands sold across different RTOs (Regional Transport Office) in India.
While we have the data for 2W, 3W, 4W and Heavy vehicles (LCV, LGV, HCV, HGV, Bus) but today, we will focus only on Heavy Vehicles.

The heavy vehicles segment is where the total cost of ownership (TCO) is a critical factor determining the profitability of a business. Today, majority of the segment consumes vast amounts of diesel. Traditionally polluting industries like cement, ports, mining, consumer goods, chemicals are attracting favourable investments if they reduce their carbon emissions. One such way to do this is by moving their fleet to electric, piece by piece.
The other pressure is to reduce the scope 2 emissions, i.e. moving the deliveries to electric fleets.
In the passenger movement section, funding is available under various government schemes to move public intracity transport to electric fleets. Fixed route transportation sees value addition in passenger comfort and running costs once the diesel bus is replaced with electric.

HGVs
HGVs stand for Heavy Goods Vehicles, which include trucks, tractors, trailers, tankers, etc. In India, there are 12 electric OEMs in this space - BYD, IPL Tech, Olectra, Energy In Motion, Propel Tech, Ashok Leyland, Sany, Blue Energy Motors, Tata Motors, iBoard, Volvo and QUCEV.
Let’s take a look at the market and also understand where the companies are coming from.
The industry has sold little over 1000 HGVs across the years. The market is small but significant.
There’s a marked decrease of BYD’s market share, the leader in HGVs. Despite having a fraction of sales in 2025, they still have ~30% market share in India. BYD has reduced direct sales in India, but they have maintained
