The service center staff aren’t trained well to handle electric vehicles. They overcharge the customers (MG incident, Tata incident) for regular service, often times bringing it closer to ICE levels. There’s no incentive for the service center staff to treat the EV differently from ICE.

EV customers are the most gullible due to probable “High battery pack cost” (if replacement is needed). They will try and do everything that they are told to do by the service center to keep the battery warranty intact.

There have been repeated instances of community customers being asked to replace the battery pack by claiming the insurance for MG cars, instead of the warranty. Low revenue per electric vehicle is one lever that pushes the service centers to engage in such unethical practices.

The service centers have ran their business for ages and haven’t seen a disruption to their business model. EVs have very few moving parts as compared to an ICE car.

Tesla’s service schedule says that you need to bring in the car when your car has an issue or if there’s a recall. Tesla is highly vertically integrated. Indian OEMs are not, but that’s not a good reason to have “no scheduled service” as a standard. It exists because that’s how it has been so far.

This ‘no scheduled service’ takes away the stress on existing dire service center network. It also takes away a chunk of their income.

The top two EV OEMs in 4W passenger - Tata and MG - follow a scheduled service for their vehicles.

The two wheeler industry is plagued with the service center problem too.

1. Traditional OEMs getting into the EV segment are relying on their existing service network to service these electric vehicles. Unless incentives are clearly aligned at the service centres, they are going to face similar challenges like 4W brands.

2. Ather has a subscription model and the customer needs to stick to the service schedule, else Ather can easily mark the vehicle as “out of warranty” leaving the customer in a lurch.

3. Ola, on the other hand, has no fixed service schedule. It even experimented with servicing the scooters via a service center on wheels. Bhavesh Agarwal, founder at Ola, recently announced that customers will be able to buy not only the Ola electric vehicles but also the spare parts. This means that anyone can order spare parts from Ola and service their vehicles. This is particularly significant and needs to be dissected, especially when they are getting 80,000 complaints a month.

Service Centres have been replacing parts instead of repairing them for a faster turnaround time. Oftentimes an entire assembly / subsystem is replaced because of one faulty part in the assembly / subsystem. The rest of the parts are then sent to the factory to see what is salvageable and what is not.

With spare parts being made available on ONDC, any garage can start replacing these for Ola customers. Similarly, mechanics dealing with electrical assembly can start replacing those for Ola customers. Eventually, we can have boutique garages specialising in fixing battery packs too.

The defective mechanical parts - could be fixed locally or sent to the OEM. Defective electrical / electronic parts can be sent to empanelled repair shops that have an expertise in handling electronics, soldering, motor windings, etc.

This allows the mechanical workshops and the repairing companies to get into this business with the right revenue expectations.

It opens up a new arena for companies with proficiency in repairing spare parts. These OEMs can operate on a hub and spoke model where one repair shop can service multiple mechanics.

This will decrease the turn around time of parts availability. It will also lead to faster resolution. The companies signing up to be empanelled vendors have a different set of revenue expectations from the traditional service center led approach.

Software related fixes are already being provided as over the air updates, for most major OEMs, except Tata.

The customers will also get a choice of where they would like their vehicles to be serviced.

The existing ecosystem players viz dealerships can continue selling electric vehicles with no recurring revenue or the OEM invests into going direct to customers.

Repairs also help OEMs with their bottom line. OEMs need to come with SOPs and manage their supply chain, which I believe are solvable problems.

Coming up with lofty ideas and executing it is not an easy task. Ola has a hit and miss record, and only time will tell if Ola can nail this type of a service model.

Statiq began by onboarding one CPO after another. It got BPCL, Glida, SunFuel, EFill, Shell, ChargeMod among others.

MG released a new app earlier last week called eHub by MG. It has been executed by . They have 21 CPOs on their app, with major CPOs like Jio BP, ChargeZone, Statiq and Zeon.

iRA.EV app, showcased by Tata EV during the Curvv launch last week, has a collaboration with all major CPOs. They have an edge over MG’s eHub by having Tata Power EZ Charge on board.

All the three apps have route planning and charger aggregation built in, in one way or other. I wrote what all features an ideal route planner and charger aggregator app should have. You can cross check the features from the post and compare it to what each app is providing to see how they rank.

Statiq

Statiq wants to be the only game in town when it comes to charger aggregation. They want to be the app everyone uses to charge their car. Of the three apps, Statiq has the largest user base. Statiq allows for anyone to sign up and start using their services. Statiq shows real time status of chargers for some CPOs, and processes payments for a few of them. Once Statiq has enough users, it is likely to charge CPOs on it’s network a service fee.

For route planning, Statiq assumes the range of the car and decides the best possible routes. They have to work a lot more on the route planning before it is useable for customers.

eHub by MG

eHub by MG is open for anyone to sign up. It also shows real time statuses from all CPOs listed on the app and processes payments for some of them. It really needs to be seen how MG pushes eHub to the customers. If MG cannot drive adoption among their own user base, it will be very hard to attract customers from other brands. If I were just an MG customer, I wouldn’t have known about this app.

eHub’s route planning is slightly superior than others. It allows you to put in the range of your car, which makes the feature useable. It still needs more work to make it seamless.

iRA.EV by TataEV

iRA.EV by TataEV is restrictive as it is designed only for TataEV customers. It is designed to be a single stop shop for them. TataEV has brought ZConnect, an app collecting data from the car and showing it to the user, EV TMSC, the current service app, with a dash of route planning and aggregated real time status of chargers on iRA.EV.

iRA.EV is available to Curvv customers for now. There’s no timeline on transitioning other existing users to iRA.EV, but it will be rolled out to other users subsequently as per Tata Motors.

I accessed iRA.EV through a friend’s Punch.EV. The route planner on iRA.EV doesn’t account for altitude. Lack of this information is bound to misguide customers. The charger aggregator platform doesn’t allow to pay for any charging sessions either. TataEV could have onboarded atleast Tata PEZC to enable payments. The users will be forced to maintain wallet balances across various CPO apps, which have to be downloaded too.

The idea of any app is to provide supreme convenience to the user. So if a Tata EV customer can book a service, buy accessories, plan their trip and pay for it from a single app, then it is convenient. It is anything but convenient right now. I hope by the time Curvv is delivered to people, Tata can fix iRA.EV’s shortcomings.

I spoke with a few CPOs registered with MG’s and Tata’s apps. They don’t see any significant traffic coming their way through the OEMs as of now. TataEV shares anonymous customer behaviour data with CPOs, which is of some help to CPOs. Smaller CPOs also see tying up with these OEMs as a brand building exercise.

So, what’s next for CPOs?

The CPOs that have not signed up might just want to sign up because of FOMO. Tata EV (via group company Tata PEZC) and MG have been installing chargers. With realtime traffic / data on the charging points, these companies can guide preferred companies to setup more chargers.

The CPOs can continue to stick to their plans if all the above is just a marketing gimmick. If any of the apps pick up steam, CPOs might have to expedite their growth and expansion strategy to stay relevant.

Startups working on charger aggregation / route planning -

If you don’t have the users, no CPO is going to share their APIs with you, unless you are building on Beckn protocol. Get users to your platform before approaching CPOs. Solve other pain points of EV customers and then get to aggregation. Route planning is still a low hanging fruit for B2C that is waiting to be disrupted.

You need to work hard and fast to get users on board because there are other players in the market, with users, looking closely to add charging services on their apps. These are Google Maps along the likes of payments giant like PhonePe.

The wording says that it is registration tax and not road tax, but the news outlets and the stock markets believe otherwise. They might be true too. My Hindi isn’t that strong.

While writing this article, another CNBC TV18 post caught my attention.

The EV industry should welcome the tax waiver policy. Yes, welcome it. Thousands of more people are going to experience what it is to drive a partial electric car. That is a thousand more customers who were not considering alternate fuel vehicles as a choice. We might look forward to atleast some reduction in vehicular emissions, which is good for our citizens.

Hybrid OEMs are going to keep harping on ‘Kitna deti hai’ (slang for mileage). That’s what they know and that’s how they will sell. EV OEMs have an expanded opportunity here because the customers are willing to listen something beyond petrol / diesel / CNG. Great advertisements for EVs will be one hook to get the customers.

There is always going to be a transition phase to adopting any new technology. The early adopters have made the switch to electric and are mostly loving the driving experience. The next set of customers are going to demand newer and better products. They are also going to demand lower price points. The global economies of scale are tilting in the favour of EV OEMs and the EV ecosystem.

EV OEMs - I am looking at Tata and MG - I genuinely believe these are the only two OEMs capable in the market right now to put out a product that works and have the massive support system to service these cars. They have to get more customers in the door and get them to adopt more electric vehicles. Tata, MG and Mahindra - with their local assembly have the power to reduce prices and bring it on par with Hybrids, if not ICE.

The CPOs need to look at investing more money in the charging ecosystem and remove barriers to continued EV adoption. If we surveyed a bunch of EV owners, the first wishlist for them would be a singular charging app. It is in your hands to decide what to do and how to shape the industry going forward.

This as a clarion call. If one government has done it, more will. It helps them because it is a populous move. The Central Government gave the EV ecosystem some head start, but the Hybrids are in the rear view mirror. Let’s roar and build the EV ecosystem.

Steps to follow if you see a red triangle 🔺 in your Tata EV. It is known as High Voltage Critical Error and is common across Tata EV cars since launch till atleast June 2024 (at the time of composing this message)

You should also follow the steps mentioned here incase of sudden unexplained battery drops or any battery related abnormalities in your car.

If you are stuck on the road : Call the tollfree RSA (Road Side Assistance 18002098282) and reach out to your SC (Service Center).

RSA is going to take their own sweet time to get to you, so relax.

Do not open up anything in your car, as it is being frequently recommended on some community groups. Let the professionals handle it.

Do not charge your car, do not drive the car. It is extremely risky for you to drive because you don't know what part of your car has failed. It is known as critical error for a reason.

Demand for a loaner car or reimbursements for daily expenses (equivalent to hiring an ICE car with fuel for the whole day). Get it in writing. Do not give up on this. This is your right as a customer, because the car is not usable not due to your faults.

Ask the service center to fix the error.

Demand for a written explanation asking why it happened and how to avoid it in the future.

If they recommend following certain charging guildelines, ask them to show where you have deviated from this behaviour in your usage for the car. TataEV has access to all consumer data. All of this has to be written communication only.

If the error occurs once, it is likely to occur again. Has happened with me 4 times. Despite getting it ‘fixed’ by TataEV.

If they find a fault with the battery pack, or if they mention that they are replacing your battery pack : In writing, ask them if the battery pack is new or refurbished. Ask them the state of health of the battery (exisiting and replaced). Your invoice should clearly mention the above data points, along with the updated warranty date on your battery pack.

This is going to be important in a few years if and when you resell the car and when it is out of warranty. The buyer should know at what SoH you got the battery pack changed. The insurance companies may also choose to differently value the replaced battery pack cars. And that can be an issue if your car is out of warranty. There’s no public communication on this issue giving a timeline when it will be fixed.

If they tell you that you should slow charge your car after every 3-4 charging sessions, you should ask them whether the Tata’s Top Management, Mr. Shailesh Chandra and Mr. Anand Kulkarni followed these guidelines in the Kashmir to Kanyakumari record breaking run of Nexon EV. Youtube link -

Revamp the way infotainment systems are used in the mass market 4W EV segment and win customers.

The time of legacy stock software from the 2000s is over. Let’s build a new EV stack.

We are still stuck in the 00’s era with the trip meter’s Trip A & Trip B. If a Bose speaker today can connect via Bluetooth to more than one phone, then why can’t the infotainment system? The older generation might be used to it and prefer it. The iPhone-owning newer generation of drivers will probably not.

But hey, why should OEMs invest in the software? Aren’t Apple and Google doing that already? Yes, they are. And that is detrimental to the OEMs. Hold that thought and I’ll address it in the article.

India has built great software and can build more. Look at Razorpay, PhonePe, Swiggy, Zomato, Zerodha’s Kite, MakeMyTrip, BookMyShow to name a few.

The software should be seamless. OEMs should look at Apple. They should delight people with easy user experiences, despite how difficult it is to build it. I do not want the OEMs to give up.

Here are some things that the car’s infotainment navigation system (not your phone) should do.

The trip planning should be a lot richer than PlugShare. The navigation system should look at elevation gain / loss, temperature, wind speed, speed limits, tolls, traffic, time of the day, and past driving behaviour to predict the estimated charge on arrival. Ofcourse, it needs to look at the chargers on the route too. It should tell me if I need to drive slower to make it to the charger.

Getting charge points information might not be straightforward or easy right now, but it is not impossible. The OEMs are large (size and wallet wise) to coerce most CPOs in sharing the static charging station data and live statuses. Once you have the 3rd, 4th, 5th and the 6th largest CPOs in India, then the top two will also come. The smaller CPOs will also be happy with the visibility. The rate of growth for the top two CPOs will likely be slower than the rest. They will not want to miss out on the visibility. No CPO is making money in the B2C side of the business. It doesn’t make sense for either side to pay for this - the OEMs and the CPO. Let the market grow. Let the customers feel good.

Outside of charging locations, the infotainment system should be able to tell me how many charging points at the particular charger are available and not available; what is the expected charging speed on arrival; whether the amenities near the charging station will be open or closed. If it is a regular route that I travel on, then it should recommend the charging stations that I have frequented in the past. It should look at the time of the day I am travelling, see if there are any good restaurants along the way coinciding with lunch or breakfast or dinner timings. Of course the route should take priority over food, unless the algorithm is so good that the customer is ok to not prioritize the route. The infotainment system should also allow developers to build widgets. Open up the platform. Let the creativity flow.

All of this is not just software play. It needs an intelligent and reliable understanding of the battery, battery management system and the hardware.

Why should the OEMs fight and not let Apple / Android take over?

The User Experience will be monotonous everywhere. Be it your watch, phone, tablet, laptop or computer. The car is a product that is getting added to this list, faster than ever before. OEMs should not lose control over digital interactions with the customer. OEMs in India can do a lot more today than what Apple or Google will be able to do in a few years. Good software will be a moat against Google and Apple. Look at Tesla. They don’t provide Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

I am going out on a limb here and say that most people use CarPlay or Android Auto for the superior ‘old school non EV native’ navigation by Google Maps. The other tasks are easily executed by connecting the phone via Bluetooth - like listening to podcasts, music or answering calls. The UX for any other EV related app (mostly PlugShare) on CarPlay or Android Auto is mediocre.

But why should OEMs pay attention to software?

Because software differentiation can win you customers. There’s a learning curve when someone switches from an ICE to an EV. There’s a much bigger learning curve for someone wanting to do road trips. Make the transition as easy as you can for them. The newer crop of drivers has grown up with software around them. They’ll appreciate honest efforts and something fresh. And what will the customers do when we have self driving, many years down the line? You’d want them glued to your screen and not their phone.

With regular updates, you can also keep adding previously unavailable functionalities. Incorporate real time feedback on how the people are using your car’s software. Make great software, make lives better for the customers.

Our EV charging bays will be open for Tesla cars, just like they are for an EV of any other brand

This is a good thing, and naturally, I checked out their ‘charging bays’.

Mercedes has ‘non-networked’ charging points at their showrooms or service centres. ‘Non-networked’ means that it isn’t available on any app and payment method is likely to be offline. The first point of failure is that users won’t know if a charging spot is busy / available / not working without visiting or calling them.

I cross referenced Mercedes’ showrooms and service center locations on PlugShare across Mumbai and Delhi NCR. I could find only one listing in Mumbai. PlugShare is publicly sourced data, so some of the information might not be completely accurate.

These reviews are old. This isn’t the first instance of a dealership denying other OEM cars to charge.

A year ago, MG dealership in Agra wasn’t allowing Tata cars to charge.

If a charger is listed to be used publicly, the host should provide the service and not discriminate on basis of the brand.

In Goa, I couldn’t charge my MG at the Hyundai dealership because I did not speak in advance with the manager.

I am glad that the top management is now explicitly stating that all cars are welcome to charge at their charging points. This should make things better for everyone!

While looking at Mercedes, I also looked at the other German auto giant - BMW. There are charging points available at many BMW dealerships. They are hosted on an app called Recharge EV. I believe this is the right way to make the charging points truly accessible to every car.

I’ve been tracking Recharge EV’s growth since February 2022.

Recharge EV has CCS2 presence across 20 states and 13 cities, with majority of their network concentrated in the metro cities. The failure rate of CCS2 and Type2 infrastructure is🔒, which is🔒than the zonal failure rate of all CPOs.

As of 14 April 2024, RechargeEV has 55 CCS2, 18 CHAdeMO and 21 Type2 charging points. I wonder why they have invested in CHAdeMO charging points. Please comment and let me know if you know!

ICYMI, I published the state of EV Charging Infrastructure report last month.

I was surprised at the sudden appearance of this particular charge point operator - Evolute Surat.

I decided to dig a bit deeper into this and figure out what happened.

Why does it matter?

Evolute Surat, established by Surat Municipal Commission, installed around 200 CCS2 charging points all over Surat city. They use similar hardware as of ChargeZone’s. The UX of the app is also very similar to ChargeZone’s.

Evolute Surat is now also the third biggest charge point operator for CCS2 charging points in West Zone.

How?

According to a September 2022 CapTable article written by Supriya Roy, ChargeZone operated via the CoCo model - ChargeZone owned and ChargeZone operated. It is embracing the dealership model too, while continuing to run the CoCo model.

Dealership model allows ChargeZone to transfer the ownership of the hardware to the dealer and ChargeZone continuing to maintain the same. DoCo - Dealership owned, ChargeZone operated.

“We got a few cheques amounting to about Rs 10 crore, where people have invested in the dealership model,” Hariyani told investors earlier this year, underscoring small business owners’ response to the soft launch of the dealership initiative. The amount has increased to Rs 35 crore, with automotive OEMs and municipal corporations getting involved, Hariyani told The CapTable.

Alright. So INR 25 Cr (~US$3M) can majorly be attributed to OEMs and municipal corporations. For simplicity sake, let’s assume that all the capital is by Surat Municipal Corporation.

Is 25 Cr enough to setup a network as big as Evolute’s?

Ravin Mirchandani, Chairman of Ador Digatron was interviewed on a TeslaClub India podcast from April 2023. From that conversation, I learnt that a company with 100s of chargers has invested around INR 25 Cr (US$3M).

Evolute Surat has 212 CCS2 charging points, which brings us to ~100 chargers with 2 dispensing units each. Evolute Surat charger’s most common configuration is 2 CCS2 fast charging points (60kW) and 1 ACType2 (7.2kW) slow charging point, and 2 such units at each location.

ChargeZone’s most fast chargers are from Quench, which is a brand by Ador Digatron.

There is of course the possibility that more OEMs and municipal corporations are exploring the DoCO model by ChargeZone, with each having their unique business model. And ChargeZone can generate revenue through multiple modes - by either taking a cut from the charging revenue earned by the corporation, or by charging the corporation a fee to operate the charging points. ChargeZone can also take a bigger chunk of revenue if they’ve co invested with Surat Municipal Corporation.

I don’t have all the answers, but I am sure looking for many.

I bought my Moonlight, 2022 MG ZS EV in late April 2022. The car has completed over 39,000 kms in just over 18 months of ownership.

In Mumbai, I would call up the service center closest to me and schedule the service. It was a smooth process. I have recently moved to Delhi. Unlike Mumbai, I don’t have a relationship with any of the MG service centers in Delhi NCR. I decided to use their My MG App to schedule a service for my car.

The app showed multiple available service centers and I decided to go with MG Gurugram Central Workshop. It is the “Central Workshop” naturally, they would have all kinds of expertise to solve car related problems. I booked for a pickup at a convenient date and time and the booking was accepted.

One day before the scheduled appointment, I got a call from their customer support saying that the Central Workshop doesn’t service EV customers.

I don’t know why EV customers are allowed to book a service at that workshop. The customer support asked me to cancel the booking and rebook it elsewhere.

I did not have the time or the bandwidth to deal with this issue. The car is my primary mode of transport in Delhi and I had cleared my day for the service. I requested the customer support to figure it out and rebook me at another workshop where my car can actually get serviced.

The customer support rescheduled my appointment at the same workshop for a later date(!!!). It seemed that I couldn’t put my point across to them. I reached out to the support to ask why they did this. They said that they don’t have the authority to cancel a customer’s appointment. I again explained my predicament and they finally decided to figure out a service center for me.

Eventually, Gurugram Sector 75 Service center agreed to service my car. They sent someone to pick up the car and drop it. On the call, I got an estimate of around INR 11-12k (~US $140) for the service. The major cost would be for the fresh coolant. They would replace the coolant only if necessary. Thankfully, the coolant didn’t need replacing and I paid ~INR 6000 (US $72) for the service.

The service included wheel alignment, replacement of the AC filter, fixing the creaking sound in the sun roof and other regular check ups. This is the first paid service for my car. The next one is due in a couple of months at 50,000 kms.

Few pointers for MG to improve their customer experience :

1. MG should learn from Tata’s EV TMSC app and provide realistic estimates for the car. The My MG App showed a service estimate of INR 36334.40 (US $436) without mentioning any specifics and what constitutes this price. The EV TMSC app shows exactly what all parts have to be changed and the charges for the same.

2. Oftentimes, I get a call from MG’s customer support to know my odometer reading. They want to know this so that they can call me again to schedule a service. What is the point of “Internet Inside” if such basic information isn’t shared with the customer support?

I will publish my experience at 50,000 kms in a few months to see if MG has made it easier for customers.

Imagine you are on your way to an important meeting, or on a holiday road trip. Your car suddenly stops showing you the State of Charge (SoC) or the range of the car. The car automatically shifts to neutral and you can’t put it in drive mode. You’ll have to bring the car safely to a halt and then the car will give up on you. The car will also show “High Volt Critical Error” on screen.

In the last two months, my Tiago EV has faced this issue not once or twice, but thrice. Before I tell you more, here is a word from my company.

The first error

The first error happened when my parents were on their way to Nashik to attend an event with their friends. The car got stranded on the ghats. The car was at 61% SoC. My parents didn’t know what to do. They called me. I reached out to a few community groups. I was told to keep the car locked and walk away from it for around 5-10 mins.

It was very difficult to park the car on narrow ghat roads. My parents somehow managed to do it. After 10 minutes, the car started behaving like it should. I reached out to Tata and decided to get the car checked with the service center. The default way to schedule a service is to use the app made specially by Tata for servicing EVs - EV TMSC.

After multiple futile attempts to book a service for my car, I took to X (Twitter) to complain. TataEV asked for some details on direct message, but didn’t bother to do anything about it.

The second error

Within 3 weeks of the first incident, the car got stranded again. I was not in Mumbai and my mother was driving the car. The car’s SoC was at 29%. The car, luckily, shut down right outside the building. The building watchman and a few other people helped push the car safely into the building compound.

This repeat incident really shook the confidence of my parents in Tata EV cars. They put the car on slow charging and the car started charging.

The third error

I was visiting Mumbai for an event hosted by Tata EV, also known as Tata EV Charging day. Tata Motors paid for my travel from Delhi to Mumbai and back. I am not at liberty to discuss what happened at the event because all the participant had to sign a non disclosure. The details to the event are irrelevant to this post.

The event was at JW Marriott, Juhu, Mumbai. The venue was less 5 km from my home. Naturally, I took the Tiago to the event. A short distance from the venue, the car started showing signs of the impending critical error. The car was at above 90% SoC.

I somehow made it to the venue but the car broke down at the entrance of the hotel. The staff at the hotel helped push the car at a safe spot for Tata officials to come and inspect the car. Mr. Amit Goyal, the head of India EV service came to the rescue, along with Omkar Shaligram, the deputy general manager at Tata EV.

They called for a technician with a laptop to diagnose the issue. The car was switched off for a few mins and the error went away, as usual. The Tata officials said that they will diagnose the issue and then let me know. From here, Tata EV took went to Puneet Motors in Worli, Mumbai.

It took them 10 days to return the car with a couple of new scratches. They’ve promised to fix the scratches by 6th November.

What happened at the workshop?

I had to follow up regularly with various people at Tata EV. Workshop incharge, city level service manager and the India EV service head. Tata has really bad customer service.

The technical team downloaded a bunch of data from the car. They tried debugging the data but couldn’t reach to any definitive conclusion. After trying to fix the car for two days, they realised that they needed more time to fix it. They sent a loaner car, a Petrol Nexon, for my family to use while they worked on the Tiago EV. The Nexon had a very weak auxiliary battery with little to no pressure in the tyres. My dad had to push the car to get it started.

Back to the Tiago EV: from what I understand, HV Critical error can come due to any number of reasons. It is considered as a “fail safe” mode. TataEV believes that this issue comes up because of one of the three major reasons - sensors in the car get disconnected, communication lines from the sensors to the control systems in the car are broken, or there’s some issue in the battery pack. One error for a lot of encompassing issues. Bad strategy, in my opinion.

They checked the sensors first and didn’t find any issue. They then checked the communication lines. They did a road test and didn’t find any errors. I asked them to recheck the car because I didn’t believe they had tested it thoroughly. They took the car on a second road test and got the same HV Critical error. The TataEV team didn’t bother to give me these updates till I followed up with them.

The technical team concluded that there is an issue with the battery pack. What issue you ask? No one knows yet. A battery engineer came to the workshop, disconnected the Battery Management System (BMS) and connected a new BMS. They did a 30-40 km road test, didn’t find any issues and concluded that the issue is fixed.

What now?

TataEV couldn’t give me any guarantee that this dangerous error will not appear again. I questioned them to understand what exactly went wrong with the BMS. They had no answers because it has not been debugged yet. I’ll update the post once I get a response from them.

The City Service Manager claimed that there could be a shorting in the BMS or a manufacturing defect or the connector had become loose. No definitive answers. I asked various people in TataEV to give me the steps to avoid this issue in the future. No one could give me any concrete guidelines.

I am not the only one facing these issues. There are hundreds, if not thousands of TataEV customers, facing this same issue. Many people have had their battery packs changed, presumably because TataEV couldn’t identify the issue. Join the communities here to see for yourself.

There’s a community belief that this error usually happens because the car is not regularly discharged and charged to 100%. I take good care of the battery and often discharge it to under 10%. I’ve rarely fast charged the car. The car’s slow charging is also till 100% with enough time to balance the battery pack cells. I’ve been following the guidelines mentioned by TataEV, so faulty battery pack or BMS is unlikely to be the issue.

Hardware manufacturing, especially the auto industry, is really hard. There is a steep learning curve for existing OEMs to switch to electric vehicles. The Tata Group is a behemoth and if any group can do it successfully, my money would be on Tata Motors. It is very difficult for TataEV team to diagnose and fix the issue locally because a lot of critical technology and components are imported by TataEV from a Chinese auto manufacturer, namely Gotion.

TataAutoComp purchases Battery Management Systems and Battery Packs from Gotion. Here’s the screenshot from Gotion’s 2023 half yearly report stating the same.

Conclusion

TataEV needs to do the following :

1. Be transparent with customers. If there’s a problem being faced by thousands of customers over many months, they need to publicly acknowledge the issue, recall the cars and push an update.

2. Communicate and educate the charging guidelines to the consumers. The dealerships and service technicians do a shoddy job.

3. Many owners have had their cars stuck at the dealership for weeks without them getting a loaner car. The service should be similar across board.

4. Fix EV TMSC app. I have been unable to book a single service via the app. Residents of non metropolitan cities have had a better luck booking a service.

5. Localize the RnD and production.

What impacts range?

Assuming the driver, the car and driving style is constant, EV driving range is impacted by :

• Speed of the car

• Weather

• Elevation gain / loss

• Wind direction

• HVAC & Traffic

If you drive your car at a high speed, your range will go down. In extreme cold and hot climates, the car has to work hard to keep the battery pack at an optimal temperature, thus impacting range. If you have an elevation incline, then your range will go down. Likewise, an elevation decline will increase your range. If you have a headwind or a sidewind, then the range will go down, because the car has to cut through the wind. HVAC, when kept on, will reduce the range of the car. (Hi Bengaluru readers!)

My experience is limited to real time driving experience of both the 2022 MG ZS EV and the 2023 Tiago EV. MG ZS sticks to the direct linear calculation, whereas the Tiago shows the GoM based on recent / previous driving.

Direct calculation

MG ZS EV has a range of 400 km on a full 100% charge, with AC off on Normal mode. The range goes up or down depending on HVAC and mode selection. For example, with AC off in Eco, the range shown is 420 km. Similarly with AC on in Normal mode, it shows 340 km as the range. You get the idea.

These numbers are shown on the instrument cluster and always stay the same. Let’s pick HVAC off and Normal mode for this article. 400 km range through a 50kWh battery pack. This means that the efficiency of the car is 8 km / kWh.

Let’s say I drove from Point A to Point B with an efficiency of 10 km / kWh and consumed 40% of the energy. The GoM in my car will show 240 km (400 km * 60%) and I would have driven 200 km. Thus, if I drove at 8 km / kWh later on, the total driving distance would be 200 + 240 = 440 km.

In this approach, the car’s baseline range is fixed. Depending on the way you drive, the range will increase or decrease. This is the direct calculation.

Previous driving based calculation

In this mode, the range is calculated based on how you’ve been driving in the past. Tata vehicles, Nexon EV, Tigor EV and Tiago EV tend to do this. They tend to calculate it as driving over the past 50 km or 100 km or 200 km or past one hour etc. This is a good way to know how much range you will get depending on the way you’ve been driving, but that is not always helpful.

Based on your driving, the range number will keep changing. If you’ve driven over a downhill, the range shown will be much higher than what the car can actually achieve, unless you keep going downhill. This is my biggest gripe with this system.

Let’s assume my MG ZS EV uses this method to calculate the range. I’ll take the same example as before. Traveling from Point A to Point B with 10 km / kWh efficiency and consuming 40% of the energy. The GoM in this case will be 300 km (10 km / kWh * 50 kWh * 60%).

This method assumes that I will continue to get 10 km / kWh efficiency over the course of the entire journey which is highly unrealistic. The previous approach considers a more realistic scenario that the car will be driven at 8 km / kWh consistently.

The base line keeps shifting, which makes the learning curve difficult. This approach only works when the driving condition across the entire route is the same. It highly unlikely in majority of the scenarios. It makes it less intuitive for new EV users to adjust to a dynamic range number.

BluSmart is becoming a vertically stacked company. They have their drivers on payroll, they own / lease out the car from OEMs via EESL. They also have their own app and charging infrastructure, so they act as a CPO (Charge Point Operator) as well. Their high density chargers are concentrated in Gurgaon, Delhi and Bengaluru. I say high density because they have 20 sites with more than 100 guns each. This infrastructure is in place to mainly charge their cabs.

This also shows in the type of charging guns that are available. Most of the chargers are GB/T type, which can be used to charge Tata XPress T EV which forms a bulk of their fleet. The newer Tigor EV, MG ZS EV and BYD E6 all use the alternate CCS2 or Type2 adapter for charging. They have enough CCS2 and Type2 chargers to be listed among the top 5 CPOs in the country!

The network is open to all EV users to reserve a slot at their chargers and charge their cars only BluSmart Cars. This is primarily being done because of the high charger to car ratio. The charging infrastructure, as a whole, is serving the cabs once a day. It would make sense to throw it open to the public to use the chargers, to boost their utilisation rates. Regular readers of this blog know that EBITDA level profitability for a charger kicks in at around 12.5% utilisation rate, or ~3h of continuous charging / charger / day.

To integrate further vertically, they need to manufacture their own cabs. Guess what. Gensol group (Blu’s parent company) is headed that way.

Uh, but how?

Gensol Group acquired an EV car company called Strom Motors in mid 2022.

Strom caught media attention because of their locally manufactured 3 wheeler reverse trike car. The Mumbai based company unveiled their car in 2018. The founder of the company, Pratik Gupta, is the founder and CEO of Gensol Electric Vehicles company.

It makes sense for Gensol to manufacture a 4W car instead of the promised GEV. Large scale EV auto manufacturing is a complex beast and not many companies starting from scratch have been successful at it, except of course Tesla. I don’t see their cars coming out before 2025 nor would it be available for the mass market to buy. Their manufacturing capacity in Pune is currently capped at 12000 units annually.

The total fleet size of BluSmart is estimated to be around 3200 cars. They would have their laser focus to augment the cars to Blu’s services across the country. I believe they will make more money if they add the cars to their fleet directly and not go mass market. They might prefer to open it up for anyone who wants to manage a fleet of EVs, primarily as taxis and would be happy to set up an entire vertically integrated stack for them. Selling the car to the general public needs a lot of marketing dollars and influencing a lot of influenza.

The strategy for BluSmart has been to try it out on someone else’s platform before you build it. For example, BluSmart started out as a service provider on Uber. They started with 70 cars and collected data to understand the ride hailing and the cab business. They built their app and then invested in growing their business. They started from Gurugram, expanded into Delhi and after a couple of years of operations, they expanded into a newer geography viz Bengaluru. They’ve been using Tata, MG, BYD cars till they can come up with their own BluCar!

Questions were sent to BluSmart / Gensol Group for this story. They acknowledged the questions, but chose to not respond to them.

Mahindra XUV4OO was launched almost a year ago in Sept 2022. Mahindra started delivering the car by late March 2023. Till Jan 2023, multiple news media outlets mentioned that the car will have 60+ connected features and cruise control. Don’t trust me blindly, read it yourself!

You can guess where this is going. The cars delivered to the owners didn’t have these features. Md Bilal, a Mahindra XUV4OO owner, during pre delivery inspection (PDI) was assured of these features by the sales representatives at a Hyderabad dealership. The sales team claimed that these features were in final stages of testing and will be rolled out in the next couple of months. Another owner, Mr. Arvind, wasn’t promised any such features or upgrades. Mr Sumit, in a YouTube video with Yash9w also mentioned that he was promised these features when taking the delivery of the car.

The new features were launched, but in an upgraded model. The total list of features that were added to the ‘upgraded model’ were - Auto Inside Rear View Mirror (IRVM), Boot Lamp, Tweeters, Tyre Pressure monitoring system (TPMS), Hill Hold Assist, Fog lamps, Cruise Control and electronic stability program (ESP).

The older model of XUV4OO, within 5 months of delivery, is sold at a discount of INR 1.25L at the dealerships. The newer model of XUV4OO is offered at a marginally higher rate than the original price of the old XUV4OO.

Side note - As per TeslaClubIndia, sourced from Vahan, Mahindra has sold approximately 1900 cars, not including the data from Telangana state, since March 2023.

The owners in the Telegram community have verified that there are provisions for most of the above features in their older XUV4OO cars. They haven’t been provided to them as an upgrade. Some of these features can be unlocked via a software update. There are cutouts available in the body of the car for the hardware like fog lamps and tweeters. The dealerships are offering fog lamps as extra paid accessories for existing owners. 

Never believe what is shown at product launches. Real products may differ wildly from what is presented in media and presentations. If a sales executive tells you that some features may be provided as a free upgrade whenever ready, don’t believe them, even if they give it in writing. Just ask any Tesla owner who was promised Full Self Driving years ago.

Owners in the community have reached out to their respective dealership and the management. They report that management at Mahindra has given strict instructions to not allow any possibility of retrofitting or unlocking of these features by over the air software upgrades.

We’ve seen a similar story play out before, with one major difference. Tata Motors launched their Nexon EV in early 2020. When they launched their updated Nexon EV Prime in 2022, they provided features like cruise control as free upgrades to their existing early adopters. They hadn’t promised features like cruise control to their early adopters when launching the first version of the car.

This is not the first time Mahindra has left early EV adopters in lurch. Mahindra has consistently ignored Reva and E2O customers in the past. Ex Reva engineers started servicing existing E2O and Reva cars in the market because Mahindra wouldn’t have spare parts. Read the report by PlugInIndia here.

The Indian Parliament approved a new law that mandates fines on companies not meeting their Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) norms, effective from April 2023. The fines can be INR 25,000 per car sold. What are CAFE norms? Car makers have to meet certain CO2 emission targets across their entire portfolio of cars being sold, thereby forcing them to lower their CO2 emissions. Read more here by AutoCar for a good primer. This is probably why you will start seeing more ICE OEMs coming out with more Battery EVs, Hybrids and *cough cough* Hydrogen cars.

What are the next steps?

I assume that the auto media journalists who flew to South Africa for Mahindra’s Thar EV launch know of this issue. They must have questioned the Mahindra management about this. If not, they can surely start now :)

Also, recalls aren’t unheard of in the auto industry. But hey, that’s just me saying things!
